'UPLANDS' is situated in the pleasant residential area of Westcliff, approximately five minutes easy walk from the sea front and promenade. Nearby are excellent shops at Hamlet Court Road. Westcliff railway station and buses to all parts of the area are only a short walk away.
Not far along the seafront is the Cliffs Pavilion, which offers a range of shows and entertainment throughout the season which may be of interest to relatives and service users.
There are churches of many different denominations in the local area and provision can be made for service users to attend the service of their choice, should they so wish.
Uplands can accommodate 27 service users. All bedrooms are single occupancy and benefit from en-suite facilities and are bright, airy and well furnished.
By prior arrangement with the Home Manager, service users may bring in small items of furniture for their exclusive use, as well as any small personal items and mementos. A safe is available in the administration office for any small, valuable items may need to be kept secure.
All beds have a reading lamp and each bed has its own connection to the nurse call system to ensure speedy attention, both day and night. Service users are free to use any of the three large lounge/dining rooms during the day and all are situated close to toilet and washing facilities.
Uplands has been furnished and carpeted to create a warm and homely environment. It has recently been fully upgraded and as a result, now benefits from a large, spacious and relaxing conservatory. This area can be used for reading, quiet contemplation, etc. and adds another dimension to the recreation areas available within the Home. A passenger lift allows easy access to the first floor.
All lounges are equipped with TV and service users can also enjoy their own radio and TV in their bedrooms.
Outings to places of interest are frequently arranged during the summer months and service users are involved in deciding the venues. Whilst service users are encouraged to participate, there is never any pressure or compulsion to do so.
Nursing staff encourage group activities and 'sing-a-longs' so that each service user can exercise any particular talent for their own benefit and enjoyment and that of others. Service users are further encouraged to take an interest in crafts and exercises.
Newspapers and periodicals can be ordered from a local newsagent for those who wish to keep up with current affairs.
Uplands has an in house physiotherapist who provides individual therapy sessions as well as a communal exercise class for the home's services users.
A qualified hairdresser visits each week and a reasonable charge is made for this service.
Service users can, of course, come and go as they please for days out with relatives or friends, - medical considerations permitting.
We always treat our service users as adults.
We adapt our service to suit the needs of our service users.
We aim to increase independence and the control the service users have over their own lives.
We generate independence not dependence.
We allow our service users to become empowered and enabled.
We give our service users real choice in decision making.
